BioAarre

Smart identification of high-value components from bio-waste and food production side streams.

Project information

  • Project name: BioAarre – Smart identification of high-value components from bio-waste and food production side streams
  • Duration: January 1, 2026 – September 30, 2026 (9 months)
  • Implementer: Posintra Oy
  • Main funder: Helsinki-Uusimaa Regional Council, ERDF (European Regional Development Fund)
  • Total budget: €72,532
  • EU funding: €50,773

Untapped side streams and waste

  • Untapped side streams, loss, and bio-waste are a cost for food industry companies.
  • Raw materials that end up as waste increase a company’s carbon footprint.
  • Food industry bio-waste contains proteins, fats, and bioactive valuable ingredients, which may have a higher added value in other applications (such as cosmetics or nutrients) than in energy production.
  • Innovations based on circular economy and artificial intelligence offer new business opportunities and improve resource efficiency.
  • EU recycling targets require increasingly effective circular economy actions from member states.

Main objective of the project

To improve companies’ resource efficiency and profitability through waste management.

The project aims to identify potential high-value components from bio-waste and side streams generated by the food industry and restaurants in the Porvoo region. These components should be recovered for higher value creation before they end up being incinerated with mixed waste or used for biogas production.

  • Reduce the amount of bio-waste, side streams, and loss ending up in mixed waste within food production.
  • Create opportunities for operators to identify potential high-value components in their waste streams.
  • Utilize AI to identify how valuable components can be better separated and recovered, and develop new operating models and processes for companies.
  • Build a situational overview for a potential larger pilot project.

Benefits for participating companies

  • A survey of potential high-value components in the company’s side streams and bio-waste.
  • Potential to reduce the amount of waste and associated costs.
  • Identification of broader AI utilization possibilities in the food sector.
  • Mapping of new value-creation opportunities.
  • Reduction of emissions.
  • A free, short-term project for companies (De Minimis aid).
  • Participation in potential follow-up projects.
