Porvoo is experimenting with a new, more carbon-neutral local tourism concept: The Archipelago Bus makes a day trip to Pellinki every Saturday in July

You can soon take off from Porvoo for a day trip to Pellinki archipelago by bus. The Archipelago Bus route runs from Porvoo market square to Pellinki summer market, the recreational area of the city, Söderbyboden village shop, and then returns to Porvoo market square.  It is an experiment that aims in increasing local tourism and reducing transport emissions.

The bus operates on four Saturdays, 6.7, 13.7, 20.7 and 27.7, from 9 am to 1:15 pm. The departure stop is located on Rauhankatu on the outskirts of the market square. Round-trip ticket for adults costs 15 €. Children get on-board half price.

Tourists can also only buy a one-way ticket for 8.50 € and travel part of the route by bike, as there are 8 seats for bikes on the bus.

The tickets are sold directly from the bus or online at https://visitpellinge.fi/en/

Objective to reduce private car use and increase local travel

The Archipelago Bus is part of the Happily project of Posintra, a development company of Eastern Uusimaa, which aims to promote resource efficiency, curb climate change and create new business opportunities through various digital solutions.

– The objective of Porvoo is to be carbon neutral by 2030, and with this quick experiment, we want to offer people in Porvoo the opportunity to use a more carbon-neutral alternative, and find out whether there is a need for such a transport service, says Arto Varis , project manager of the Happily project.

If there is enough demand, the Archipelago Bus will expand to new destinations in the summer of 2020.

Local delicacies and archipelago atmosphere

The Archipelago Bus takes tourists to the archipelago, on a ferry ride and to Pellinki summer market, where you can buy local delicacies, fresh fish and handicrafts.

Next to the market square is the Porvoo city recreational area, a child-friendly beach, and a barbecue area at a vantage point at a height of 30 meters. The market square also has a cafe.

From the market square, the route continues to Söderbyboden village shop and cafe, and back to Porvoo through Voolahti.

The project is implemented together with local entrepreneurs and the city of Porvoo. The bus is operated by Oy Kaj Forsblom Ab.
