HUIMA – New ideas for energy efficiency in industry

The aim of the HUIMA project was to promote energy efficiency in industry and the development of renewable energy solutions. The project sought to increase circular economy business and highlight the potential for utilizing waste heat in industry. The goal was to find new ideas and technical solutions for recovering surplus heat, develop business plans based on them, and create a cooperation network between industry and innovative companies in Southwest Finland and Uusimaa.

Key lessons and findings

  • Cooperation and networks between industrial and energy companies are essential for the utilization of industrial waste heat. Through cooperation, concrete industrial waste heat targets were identified, and solutions were sought for them in a nationwide ideas competition.
  • Solutions for utilizing waste heat are often technically feasible, but investment decisions are slowed down by uncertainties about economic viability and the division of responsibility.
  • The potential survey highlighted the amount and value of waste heat, which increased understanding of the importance and opportunities of energy efficiency.

What do we now know and understand better at Posintra?

  • Expertise in industrial energy flows, side streams, and heat recovery solutions was added, and their business potential was explored in greater depth.
  • We know how to facilitate networking and engage in joint development.
  • We understand how to build economically viable business models for the circular economy.
  • We know how to make better use of social media marketing targeted at different audiences.

Summary and next steps

The HUIMA project strengthened cooperation promoting energy efficiency and the circular economy in industry in the Uusimaa and Southwest Finland regions. Posintra and its partners identified the technical and business opportunities for utilizing waste heat and created networks to implement them. Going forward, the focus will be on concrete pilot projects, strengthening business cooperation, and scaling new energy efficiency solutions as part of regional development work.
