STRIIM – Cooperation for sustainable future

Strengthening the regional industrial innovation model

A sustainable future is made together – we need more and deeper cooperation, especially between the public and private sectors. STRIIM – Strengthening the regional industrial innovation model project pilots a new kind of cooperation model that promotes discussion, connects actors and identifies new opportunities. The aim of the STRIIM project is to promote cooperation for a sustainable future between companies.

Porvoo Kilpilahti – international pioneer

Kilpilahti, the largest chemical industry centre in the Nordic countries, is being developed into a leading bio- and circular economy cluster.

The STRIIM project is based on the need to respond to the challenges of the green transition in a new and objective-oriented manner. This identified need will be addressed by strengthening regional innovation cooperation between actors in Uusimaa. The operating environment of the project is the largest oil refining and petrochemical cluster in the Nordic countries, located in Kilpilahti, Porvoo, where more than 40 companies operate, providing more than 4 000 jobs, and at the same time being one of the largest single sources of CO2 emissions in Finland.

Plastic waste for recovery and plastic recycling profitable

With the help of STRIIM, an ideal target image of the plastic recycling ecosystem operating in Kilpilahti is created with the key actors in the area. The objective is to utilise raw material consisting of plastic waste as resource wise and innovative as possible. In joint development work, needs, opportunities and key challenges are identified, which would enable development in the direction of the ideal image.

Green transition – carbon-neutral future is created through cooperation

To mitigate climate change, the EU aims for carbon neutrality by mid-century. Finland’s objective is 2035 and Uusimaa, in turn, aims for carbon neutrality in 2030. Industry has an important role to play in mitigating CO2 emissions. The objective requires the strengthening of carbon sinks and emission reductions in all sectors.

Through new, deeper and more systematic cooperation between the public and private sectors, we promote Kilpilahti’s development into a leading hub for renewable raw materials and circular economy solutions. At the same time, we want to develop Kilpilahti into an attractive green innovation platform for companies and a unique cooperation network, while enabling the creation of new jobs in the Porvoo region.
